The Belted Kingfisher

The Belted Kingisher is one of my favorite predatory birds that has long eluded my camera and I. I do see them quite often but they are mischievously sneaky, only letting me know I've unknowingly ventured into their territory by flying away while sending a sharp rattle of a call through the air that startles me every single encounter. I have long thought them a beautiful bird but, admittedly, have always had trouble getting close to them. Despite their Rock n Roll hairdo and agile nature they are extremely shy. Females are signified by their powdery blue feathers and a chestnut band across the breast mixed with a pearly white pattern, which also helps them to blend well with their water-world surroundings (shorelines, rivers, and lakes). Razor sharp vision and a beak to envy help round off this bodacious predator. They normally burrow in earthen banks and find that high perches help them to catch their mostly aquatic prey. Since taking these pictures I have found a location where two of these flighty subjects reside and hope to soon provide more photos of these interesting creatures.

Caution Ahead: Kids At Play

Summer time in NC brings hot weather and a lot of humidity, some days it seems as if even the wind is hot. Trees are green and thick with leaves that provide shade and a break from the heat. Wildlife is busy nurturing the new borns of nature. Pictured above are two baby turkeys, called poults. The world must seem so large, run amuck with mystery and adventure, danger and joy. All the sights, sounds, and smells are new and strange. The world is in awe of and manipulated by the grand display of the sun rising and the moon falling. Instincts are innate but nothing can ever replace the guidance of a mother. Walking in her foot steps, learning when she's cautious and why. Studying to read the signs of the wilderness and what they mean. Soaking every bit of detail she has to offer, that is survival and the key to living another day. From high on a perch the world can be seen in fine detail for all that it has to offer. Yet confined to that perch without a means to travel, a top predator to-be (Osprey) must rely solely on its mother and father to feed them and keep them warm. Until its time to learn to fly, and what a daunting first flight it will be over water, the only means of survival is from the talons and beak of the parents. A Bob White quail chick scurries quickly toward a thick patch of switch grass. When in doubt, covey up and hunker down in thick vegetation is the motto of the quail. They blend in perfectly with their surroundings when they do so. It's an invaluable lesson to this young chick. Fledgling Red Shouldered Hawks are loud and impatient in their first weeks of leaving the nest. They chase each other and fly erratically while constantly screeching at one another. It's not hard to imagine young siblings play fighting. Between their playful bouts and abnormal wing beats, they learn to hunt from their parents. Their success rate is low at first but in order to survive they must learn, and fast. Of course life isn't always hanging in the balance as displayed by this Yellow bellied slider turtle. Sun bathing always does the soul good. Thank you for tuning in and be sure to subscribe to my blog. I hope you enjoyed this post! Austin

Watch Your Step

I noticed this creature swimming stealthily across the water while out on Lake Juniper. Slithering silently from lily pad to cypress tree the water moccasin is on the hunt but he must be careful as Osprey linger high overhead in perches with razor sharp vision and talons to match. I ease my kayak around the back side of an old, watered down stump jutting haphazardly from the lake and suddenly find myself in a Mexican standoff with the snake. His tongue flips fast as his piercing eyes lock onto me. I snap a few photos of this venomous snake and ease my kayak away, not wanting to press my luck. The snake seems to be of a similar mindset and carefully continues his journey. While I deeply respect snakes, or should I say: they freak me out, I do know they serve a purpose in our ecosystem. Despite my lack of affection for snakes, I couldn't help but notice that this snake's eyes were enchanting. My enchantment didn't last long, this snake quickly reminded me that life and death are in constant contention in the wild. Nature is a beautiful being but a vicious one as well. Lightning and the Wind

Hello everyone and welcome to my photography blog, I appreciate you taking a moment to check it out.  Please be sure to subscribe to my blog, share it (FB and twitter icons at the bottom of the post), and comment on posts; I always enjoy hearing your thoughts.  On this blog I will be doing two things: sharing photos I take throughout my adventures and in everyday life while also giving helpful tips on what I do to capture the shots.  If you have a question about a blog I've posted or simply want to say hello, check out the Contact Me tab on this website.  If you decide one of my photos is a wall hanger be sure to check out the Order Prints tab!

My parents (especially my dad) enjoy Native American history.  I recently read this story and thought it would be fitting to go with the photo highlighted on this blog entry.

There's an old Apache wise tale that speaks of a time the Wind and Lightning got in an argument about which one is more powerful and does the most good on Earth.  This upset the Wind and so he hid from the Earth.  The Earth dried and received no rain causing great heat and suffering.  Lightning sent hawks and bees to find the Wind.   Bees found the Wind in a distant region where they begged the Wind to come back.  The Wind agreed and four days later met with Earth and Lightning on a high peak.  The Wind agreed to return from hiding so Wind and Lightning used their power to fill the Earth with green grass and water once again and created the four seasons.  Lightning and Wind made a pact to never disagree again.

I feel like that wise tale is a great story to apply to everyday life.  Bosses and employee's must work as a unit to achieve a common goal.  In marriage you must find a harmony at home and in life.  Relationships of all sorts require a balance of responsibility to one another.

I hope you enjoy the photo!  Be sure to share this blog and comment on the post.
